Abstract
This paper argues that the analysis of the particles of Sinhala words lu 'reportative', yae 'dubitative', nang 'conditional', da 'interrogative', ne 'tag' as focus markers in the previous literature ( Kariyakarawana (1998), Hagstrom (1998), and Henadeerage (2002), is incorrect and that they must be re-analyzed as mood/modality/topic/focus markers that instantiate Rizzi's (1997, 1999) Left Periphery analysis and Cinque's (1999) universal hierarchy of functional heads. With empirical evidence of syntactic, semantic/pragmatic in nature, a unified cartography is proposed for Sinhala clauses that include these so-called focus markers and the other functional heads that construct the Sinhala clause.
