Abstract

This study was designed to examine the extent to which teachers use instructional strategies that focus on developing Higher Order Cognitive Skills in students and to make recommendations for the improvement of existing teacher education programmes.

Both quantitative and qualitative techniques were considered when developing the methodology for the study. A purposive sample of 18 schools was selected from Gampaha, Kalutara and Colombo Districts representing urban and rural sectors, four school types and the two media. In-depth information was collected about the lessons taught by teachers in relation to Mathematics, Sinhalese, Tamil and Science in Grade 9 classes. Both qualitative and quantitative techniques were used for data analysis.

The study revealed that in all four subjects, the emphasis was mainly on concept analysis which differed from subject to subject, emphasis being highest in Science and lowest in Sinhala Language. Due to negligence of cooperative learning, connectedness to the world beyond the classroom, discussion and questioning teachers were unable to make education relevant, stimulating and enjoyable to the students.
