Abstract

This study examines the impact of organizational culture on leadership in public sector organizations in Sri Lanka. The type and the nature of the organizational culture can affect leadership effectiveness. Two standard questionnaires were administered among 200 managers selected from a cross sectional sample of public sector organizations. The analysis of variance (ANOVA) and mean comparison tests were applied to analyze the data in relation to the hypotheses testing. The organizational culture was assessed by using the Gordon and Di Tomaso typology. Leadership effectiveness was measured in term of performance, satisfaction and commitment of employees. It was found that strong cultures lead to high leadership effectiveness while weak cultures lead to low leadership effectiveness in the public sector organizations in Sri Lanka.
